Dangerously Cold Weather Expected This Weekend

Extremely cold conditions are expected to continue and worsen in our area as an arctic cold front moves through late tonight, February 12, and into Saturday morning bringing dangerously cold wind chills for the weekend.

Temperatures Saturday night into early Sunday will fall to around zero degrees in and around NYC and New Jersey, Long Island, and Coastal CT. Temperatures will fall between 5 and 10 degrees below across interior portions of NE New Jersey, the lower Hudson Valley and Southern Connecticut. Wind chill values during this time could reach life threatening levels - as cold as 20 to 30 degrees below.

High temperatures for Sunday are expect to only be in the teens.

Warnings:

Cold spells like this bring the risk of frostbite and hypothermia for anyone who does not take proper precautions.

Frozen pipes and overworked furnaces could leave your home without heat or running water. Run water at a trickle and keep cabinet doors open to prevent pipes from freezing.

Car batteries run the risk of dying.

Take precautions:

Never venture outdoors without wearing gloves, a hat, and several layers of clothing.

Never use a stove or oven to heat your home or use an open flame to melt frozen pipes. Many house fires result from doing these things.

Take extra steps to keep pets warm and know their limits to the cold.

NOAA Outlook for Early Next Week: Low pressure moving up the coast could produce significant wintry precipitation Monday Night into Tuesday morning, changing to heavy rain capable of causing flooding Tuesday afternoon and night.
