Art/Place Gallery invites the public to a reception and talks tomorrow June 26 at 2 pm for "Animals and Emotions" an exhibit featuring two artists, artist Art Gerstein and psychotherapist Alice Katz. "Animals and Emotions" runs from June 23 to July 31.
The impressionistic color pieces Art Gerstein now produces on paper, canvas and aluminum have been exhibited in Florida, where he received an award, and locally at the City Lights Gallery, Webster Bank, the Norwalk Library, the Weston Library, Fairfield University Bookstore, SPAG in Norwalk, and Art/Place Gallery. Art says the animals in the show are from images taken at the Norwalk Aquarium where he was artist in residence, from an expedition to the Galapagos, and from the Sanibel Island preserve in Florida. "My work comes from a place within me that is spiritually connected and is influenced by how colors affect people. My art is thematic, bringing to the surface the hidden universe I perceive, with depth and feeling that make many viewers want to reach out and feel the surface of the art pieces themselves.”
Alice Katz has been making art her whole life, having come from a family with many artists. Her artwork has been shown in many area museums and galleries and is in private collections. Besides being an Art/Place member, she is Program Chair of Fairfield County Arts Association and is on the Curatorial Committee for the Kershner Gallery in the Fairfield Library. This show features pieces that express a variety of human emotions, including happiness, calm, sadness, despair, anger, rage, terror, and vanity. They are made with collage materials, acrylic and oil pastels, paper mache, cut paper, and photomontage. Alice says she chooses materials that best express the emotion depicted, and " I am always aware of the design element, the colors, and the division of space as I create each piece. ”
Art Gerstein is a Norwalk digital photographer and a Reiki practitioner. He worked as an assistant to a photo-journalist and then as a production still photographer.
