Stress management & wellness expert Brian Luke Seaward to appear at WCSU on Oct. 18

Dr. Brian Luke Seaward, an internationally acclaimed author, teacher, consultant, motivational speaker and stress management expert, will present “Stressed is Desserts Spelled Backwards” on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at Western Connecticut State University.

The talk, sponsored by the WCSU Institute for Holistic Health Studies, will be at 7:30 p.m. at Ives Concert Hall in White Hall on the university’s Midtown campus, 181 White St. in Danbury. Seaward, executive director of the Paramount Wellness Institute in Boulder, Colorado, will discuss approaches to stress management using mind-body-spirit healing and strategies for promoting health and wellness. Seaward will sign copies of his books, including the recently published second edition of “Stressed Is Desserts Spelled Backwards,” at the conclusion of his presentation.

The public is invited to attend; tickets may be purchased at a fee of $15 at www.wcsu.edu/tickets or (203) 837-TIXX. WCSU students with valid ID may obtain tickets at no charge and WCSU faculty and staff may purchase tickets at a discounted rate at the box offices in the Midtown Student Center and Westside Campus Center.

Seaward has shared his insights on strategies to manage stress and promote personal healing and wellness in motivational lectures at scores of universities across the United States and presentations at international health care and wellness conferences. His workshops have provided instruction and inspiration to U.S. Army officers, Olympic athletes, White House staff members and Broadway actors as well as participants at dozens of major corporations including Hewlett Packard, Procter and Gamble, John Deere, BP-Amoco and Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

Other published works by Seaward include “Quiet Mind, Fearless Heart,” “Stand Like Mountain, Flow Like Water,” “Health of the Human Spirit” and “The Road to Wellness: Finding Your Path to Health and Well-Being,” as well as textbooks, workbooks and journals. His documentary film, “Earth Songs,” has appeared at film festivals and on PBS. In 2012, he presented the TEDx Talk, “Stress Management and Human Spirituality.”

Biographical notes posted on Seaward’s website described him as “passionate, witty, humorous and, perhaps most of all, inspiring. He truly touches hearts, and most anyone will tell you this is how he heals. Through his teachings, he offers a unique synthesis of insights blending the ageless wisdom of human spirituality with the topic of stress to reveal the alchemy of humanity and divinity.”

“It has been said that he looks like James Taylor, dresses like Indiana Jones, and writes like Mark Twain,” the biography observed. “In the role of traveler, visionary, mystic, healer and mentor, Seaward has created a legacy in the field of wellness and health promotion for all to share.”

Joan Lunden, former host of Good Morning America, said Seaward’s teachings “have touched my life profoundly and helped me to find grace and dignity, patience and compassion to navigate my ever-changing course.” Physician and author Dr. Larry Dossey remarked that Seaward goes beyond conventional approaches to stress “to speak of the soul and of human spirituality, because he realizes that stress management and maximal health are impossible to attain unless the questions of life’s meaning are addressed.”

Seaward began his career as associate director of the cardiac rehabilitation unit of a Wisconsin hospital and has served on the faculty of American University, University of Colorado and University of Northern Colorado. A popular speaker on college campuses, he will present the program, “Life in Balance,” to students of the WCSU School of Professional Studies during his visit to Danbury. IHHS has arranged Seaward’s visit in collaboration with the Goldstone Caregivers Center at Danbury Hospital, where he will present a talk on “Caring for the Caregiver” on Oct. 19.
