On the Children's Shelf: Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling

I have a confession. Despite being a huge fan of children and young adult fiction, I have never read "Harry Potter." Seriously. I own the first few books. I have listened to friends rave about them, but I have never read them.

I often avoid the most popular books. I know that may sound odd. I think in a weird way I worry that I will be the one person who doesn't love them, somehow ostracizing me from my book friends. Not that I believe we have to love all the same books, but it can be a bit uncomfortable if you adore a book, and I despise it. I felt similar trepidation when I read Donna Tartt's "The Goldfinch." Despite my concern of "what if I'm the only person who doesn't love it," I couldn't put the book down and saw what my friends were raving about.

Although I have never read "Harry Potter," I often praise the series. I love books that get people reading. I love books that get people excited about the next book coming out. I love that this series got so many people talking about books and lining up outside book stores to get the next one....I really love that. People lined up to get books, not to meet a celebrity but to get a book. Ah, it takes a special series to get so many people so passionate about a story.

So I'm making another reading resolution...this summer, I will give "Harry Potter" a try. I think it is time I finally read it. I will keep you all posted on my progress.

Happy reading!
