Heading into Saturday afternoon’s game against Hyde School, Wooster School’s Venus Okwuka, of Brookfield, CT, was only five points away from breaking the girls all-time career scoring record.
Venus scored 21 points in the game to break McKenzie Corby's career record of 1,450 points set back in 1998. Venus joined the varsity team in 7th grade and it’s no surprise to anyone who has watched her play that she reached this milestone.
Only 5:42 minutes into the game, after grabbing a rebound, Venus made the shot to score the points that broke the girls all-time scoring record!
“I just want our team to do well,” Okwuka said. “I'm not scoring all these points for the sole purpose of beating the record, it's so that our team can be successful.”
“Above all else, I am happy for, and proud of, Venus in regards to achieving this milestone,” said Coach Dave MacNutt. “It has been a wonderful journey to have witnessed, and played a role in, Venus' development as a player. She has played an integral role in the success of our program for several consecutive seasons, so it's really nice to see Venus enjoy this well-deserved moment in the spotlight.”
