Danbury Offering Free Radon Testing to Residents

The Danbury Health and Human Services Department will be providing free radon testing kits for Danbury residents on a first come, first serve basis. Free radon testing is part of an ongoing city initiative to work with residents in keeping our community safe and healthy.

Radon in homes is the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Radon is a naturally-occurring radioactive gas that forms when uranium decays is found in rocks, soil and water. The gas is invisible and has no smell, making it an elusive “silent killer” if it’s not specifically tested for. It’s believed that radon gas exposure is responsible for 21,000 lung cancer deaths in the United States each year and the City of Danbury is being proactive in offering free radon testing kits.

Radon levels vary seasonally and tend to be higher in the winter months making this the best time to test. Keep your windows and outside doors closed as much as possible during the test and test in a frequently occupied room inside your home (ex. family/living room).

If your house has elevated levels of radon, you should choose a qualified radon mitigation (reduction), contractor, to take steps to reduce the levels to below 4 pCi/L. Qualified radon contractors have attended specialized courses and are registered through the CT Department of Consumer Protection. A mitigation contractor takes steps including installing ventilation systems, sealing entry routes for radon gas and installing sub-slab depressurization systems to reduce radon levels.

Remember Radon presents a serious health risk, but it can be controlled easily and cost-effectively. Test your home for radon and take steps to reduce elevated levels.

Your free radon test kit can be picked up at the Danbury Health and Human Services Department located on the first floor of City Hall at 155 Deer Hill Avenue.
