Twelve students nominated for honors at 2017 KCACTF regional college theatre festival at WCSU

Twelve Western Connecticut State University students who participated in the spring semester Department of Theatre Arts production of Tennessee Williams’ “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” have earned nominations for honors at the 2017 Region 1 Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival to be held next January at WCSU.

Five Western students from the cast of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” directed by Professor of Theatre Arts Sal Trapani, have been selected as nominees or alternates to compete for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship in auditions at the 2017 Region 1 festival. Irene Ryan Scholarship nominees and their roles include Eric Jagun, of Prospect, as Big Daddy; Nicholas Raynes, of Brookfield, as Brick; and Shaylen Elizabeth Harger, of Orange, as Maggie. Alternates for the auditions are Lauren Bell, of Southbury, as Mae; and John Mudgett, of Newtown, as Gooper.

Seven WCSU student participants in the production also earned 2017 Region 1 KCACTF nominations in design, technologies and management (DTM) or certificates of merit for work in directing, set construction and costuming. DTM nominees include Claire Gaudette, of Thomaston, for stage management; Andrew Gusciora, of Orange, for sound design; and Victoria Meskill, of New Milford, and Jessica Ricchetti, of Fairfield, as properties masters. Designees for certificates of merit are Noah Todd, of New London, as assistant director; J.P. Misciagna, of Ridgefield, as master carpenter; and Alexa Haynes, of Ridgefield, as assistant costume designer.

The 2017 Region 1 festival will mark the second year that the prestigious showcase of college theatrical productions and talent in the Northeast will be held at Western’s Visual and Performing Arts Center. The 2016 festival from Jan. 26 through 31 at Western attracted some 1,200 students, faculty members and other participants representing approximately 50 colleges and universities in New England and eastern New York. The KCACTF, founded in 1969, seeks to promote excellence in theatre through a higher education network that now reaches more than 600 colleges and universities nationwide.
