RVNA presents Healthy Cooking for Diabetes

3-part series beginning Tuesdays, October 11

Ridgefield, CT –Living with diabetes doesn’t have to mean deprivation, starvation or bland foods.  Educating yourself on how to balance your meals and make informed food choices is an important part of managing your diabetes, preventing complications and improving your health and well-being, while still enjoying meals.

To aid in this endeavor, the Ridgefield Visiting Nurse Association is offering a 3-part nutrition class series titled “Healthy Cooking for Diabetes,” designed for people with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, or for those at risk of developing diabetes. Participants will learn how to control their diabetes using healthy eating strategies, balance intake to control blood glucose levels, and modify nutrient intake to manage weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol.  Participants will also learn new, low-cost and simple recipes while enjoying delicious samples prepared in the RVNA teaching kitchen.  The class will be taught by Meg Whitbeck, MS RDN, RVNA’s Dietitian and Nutrition Educator.

“Making changes in lifestyle can be difficult and knowing what to eat can be confusing,” said Whitbeck. “Food and nutrition play an important role in managing diabetes, and paying careful attention to what and when you eat helps to control blood sugar levels. The body needs proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals in the right amounts and at the right times to function properly.”

This 3-part class schedule will be as follows:

October 11 - The Low Down on Carbohydrates

October 18 – Fats: A Balancing Act

October 25 – Proteins: Lean and Clean

All classes will take place on Tuesdays, October 11-25 from 11:00am - 12:30pm at the RVNA Center for Exceptional Care, located at 27 Governor Street in Ridgefield. The fee is $23 per class and registrants can attend 1, 2 or all-3 sessions. Pre-registration is required. Please register by calling RVNA at 203.438.5555.
