Living with Alzheimer's for Caregivers: Middle-stage

The Alzheimer’s Association is presenting a Living with Alzheimer's three-part caregiver course that will take place at Putnam Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 46 Mt. Ebo Road N, Brewster, NY, starting on Tuesday, October 11 and continuing on Oct 18 and 25.  A light dinner will be served at 5:30 PM with the program starting shortly after.

Those who attend all three parts of the course will receive a certificate of completion at its conclusion; however, each part is independent for drop-in attendance with no certificate.

The first session on Oct. 11th will cover, symptoms of middle stage, effective way to communicate, relationship changes, providing personal care and preparing for hospitalizations.  Caregivers will learn techniques to ease transitions and be given tools to help facilitate a positive environment and reduce tension.  On Oct 18th, behavior changes, such as wandering and safety issues, will be covered, as well as medication management, home safety and transportation will be addressed.  We will discuss when it is appropriate to take away the car keys and other safety measures in the home.  The last portion will cover day services, such as adult day care, in-home care services, senior living options, skilled nursing and caregiver needs.  Many community resources are available for older adults living with dementia and finding the right services is key to keeping loved ones safe, with dignity and respect.
