Morris Street School kindergarteners participate in moving up ceremony & receive fall backpacks from Girl Scouts

Morris Street School kindergarteners

The 64 Morris Street School kindergarten students who moved up to first grade at a ceremony held Friday morning got a little help from the Girl Scouts.

The gymnasium was packed with parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles who watched as the students danced and sang before receiving certificates of completion. At the end, each student was presented with a backpack filled with supplies they will use in the fall when they enter first grade.

The backpacks were provided by Girl Scout Cadette Troup 50340 led by Brigg Hyland. The girls, Bronwyn Hyland of St. Joseph’s school, and Maggie Donato, Katie Donato and Sofia Velez, all from St. Gregory’s school, were at the ceremony Friday to distribute the backpacks. The 15 members of the troop handed out 380 backpacks to Danbury kindergarten students at five schools. The girls raised $7000 through fundraising efforts in April in order to supply the backpacks.

In 2011, Brookfield resident Charlie Schott launched a three-year pilot program at Morris Street with 16 volunteers working with teachers and mentoring students. This year, the Girl Scouts also worked with Morris Street student in the after-school extended learning program every Wednesday with homework, reading and games.
