Wooster School Kicks Off Winter Sports Season

The preseason practices are over; we held our second annual Mid-Day Madness; the weather still feels like fall, but the winter sports season is about to begin! Upper and Middle School students will begin competing in basketball, hockey, and skiing!

Boys Basketball

The Varsity Boys Basketball 2016-17 season looks bright as 14 players return from a team that won both the regular season and tournament HVAL titles in 2015-16. Furthermore, a trip to the New England finals was very narrowly missed. Most importantly, this group was dedicated to working hard, having fun and believed in one another.

Led by Coach David Newman, Josh Carone ‘18 and Charlie Gabrik ‘18 are two additions that will add to an exciting team that returns: Kern Byrnes ‘17, Cooper Byrnes ‘19, Brandon Reid ‘18, Chris Gephart ‘18, Brogan Heneghan ‘17, Arda Buyuklu ‘17, Bennett Wattles ‘18, Cosme Navarro ‘18, Stephen Perreault ‘17, Jarrett White ‘18, Tyler Wagnblas ‘18, Sam MacMillan ‘19, Sam Cox ‘17 and Alex Foote ‘17.

The 2016-17 season opens with a new addition to the schedule, King School of Stamford, CT on December 1. Win or lose, the Generals are looking to get off to a fast start. This is fun group of kids who love playing the game.

Girls Basketball

The most successful program in the history of Wooster School, Girls Varsity Basketball, will look to continue its winning ways during the 2016-17 campaign. Although some of the faces on the team change from year to year, the great camaraderie, team chemistry, successes, and family-like feel have remained constant. The team is in great shape with the top six players from last year returning, and they are: Sarah Fried ‘17, Venus Okwuka ‘17, Caylynn Maldonado ’18, Morgan McCutcheon ’18, Lizzie Nicoletti ’18, and Brittany Reid ’18. This group will be ably joined by Gabby Binghi ’18, Hayden DellaCamera ’18, Nicole Caraballo ’19, and Morgan Reilly ’20. Rounding out our team are Brianna Clarke-Ellis ’17 and Trista Ma ’17 in managerial roles.

Given the level of skill, competitiveness, and desire displayed throughout tryouts, the players should be very optimistic regarding the season ahead and their development. This team should be fun to watch as they strive to pursue their individual and collective potentials and goals, which include a run at the HVAL title as well as reaching the New England tournament for a record setting 24th consecutive year. Coach Dave MacNutt says “If the players work to the best of their ability, we are in store for a very rewarding season.”

The Generals open up the 2016-17 game schedule on the road at Masters, CT on December 7.

Ski Team

The Wooster Ski team looks strong again this year. Although the team graduated the league's top racer, there is a solid mix of experienced racers that are sure to make the team very competitive again this year. The boys' team returns Silas Munk ‘18, Reed Baker ‘19, Peter Nekos ‘18 and Liam Weaver ‘18, while the girls return Niav Doyle ‘19 and add Georgie O'Connell ‘20 to the mix.

Coach Paul Zagozewski is looking forward to seeing what each racer can do and if the team can continue to get strong individual results in the Berkshire-Hudson Ski League.

The Generals ski team has its first race on January 11 at Catamount Ski Area.

Ice Hockey

Wooster School is dedicated to providing a wide array of athletic opportunities on both the varsity and junior varsity levels which will enhance and enrich the educational experience of our students, as well as provide recreational and fitness activities for the entire community.

In an effort to further athletic opportunities for our student athletes, Wooster School has partnered with South Kent School, to provide Wooster students the opportunity to play varsity ice hockey. Cole Hollett ’18, Jack Caiola ’20, and Drew Greeley ’20 are participating in South Kent’s program this year and representing Wooster on the ice.

Led by South Kent Coach Todd Gennings, the ice hockey team opens the season on December 3 on the road at Rye Country Day School.
