Cultural Alliance of Western CT @287 Gallery Opens Season with House of Her

"House of Her" is a Solo Exhibit of works by Wilton-born artist, Stefania Urist

There will be a FREE Public Reception on Friday, March 3

"Why are rigid, right angles seen as masculine whereas natural forms that curve and comfort tend to typify femininity?" asks Westport born and raised artist Stefania Urist.  She answers that question with House of Her, a solo exhibition opening at the Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut's @287 Gallery & Meeting Place, 287 Main Street, Danbury, on Friday, March 3rd, with a free reception to the public from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. (For reservations, go to http://bit.ly/HOUSEOFHER) A special artist-led tour of the show is scheduled for Saturday, March 25th, 1:00pm to 2:30pm. The exhibition, organized by newly appointed curator Lacee Yurtoglu, will run through Friday, May 12th. The exhibition is made possible, in part, through the generosity of the Savings Bank of Danbury and Brio Tuscan Grille.

"I'm eager to share this collection of uniformly geometric and organic works with @287 Gallery," says Lacee, "House of Her touches on subjects we all may find common ground in. It has been a pleasure forming concepts for 2017 in such a creative atmosphere." Four more exhibitions will round out the year's offerings.

Stefania Urist has lived in and gathered inspiration from many diverse places she has called home, from the urban jungle of Brooklyn to the lush greenery of Vermont. In 2013, she earned her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design’s Glass Department. She has attended and created new stimulating pieces at many vibrant artist residencies and shown work in New York City, Norwalk CT, Paonia and Longmont CO, and Manchester VT. Stefania currently lives, creates new work, and plays in Manchester VT.

Using man-made materials such as glass, concrete, and steel, Stefania reimagines traditional concepts of gender and confronts ingrained ideals of the female body. She notes, "A tendency toward categorization goes beyond gender. We attempt to construct barriers between city and nature, architecture and organic matter, and geometric structures and human bodies." With House of Her, clay, sand, wool, and ore have been worked by countless hands to become brick, glass, thread, concrete, and lead, which have then been reworked back into organic sculptures that express a unique statement.

The @287 Gallery & Meeting Place is open 10:00am to 4:00pm Thursday and Friday, 11:00am to 3:00pm on Saturday. For more information, call the Cultural Alliance of Western Connecticut at (203) 798 0760 or visit artswesternct.org
