Pepperidge Farm Awards Grant to Person-to-Person

UWCFC/Pepperidge Farm Norwalk Healthy Children Funds $5,000 Grant for Person-to-Person

In Norwalk, nearly 50% of public school students are eligible to receive free or reduced-priced meals at school. During summer vacation, these meals are not available and the families of these children struggle to stretch their already meager resources to provide additional meals.

To address this need for additional food, Person-to-Person (P2P) requested and received a $5,000 grant through the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County from Norwalk-based Pepperidge Farm. P2P Director of Social Services Marina Thomas says the funds are being used to purchase food to stock the agency's Norwalk Food Pantry. "We are serving a greater number of families with children right now and this grant is helping to feed more than 300 children this summer."

More than half of the food available at the P2P Food Pantry is donated. The ability to purchase items such as fresh produce and meats allows P2P to provide a range of healthy options. "So many of our clients work at minimum wage jobs and they are juggling the bills to cover basic expenses for food, clothing and shelter." Thomas notes that for clients who qualify to utilize the P2P Food Pantry, having access to free groceries to feed their families is one less thing for them to worry about.

With this grant, Pepperidge Farm demonstrates its commitment to enhancing the health and wellness of the Norwalk community. "Because of their support and generosity," says Thomas, "many of our clients don't have to see their children go hungry this summer and that's invaluable."
