Family & Children's Agency To Expand Home Visiting Program for At Risk Mothers

Family & Children’s Agency (FCA) has received a multi-year grant from The Grossman Family Foundation, to support expansion of the Maternal Outreach and Mentoring Service (MOMS) program.

The MOMS program supports mothers in the Norwalk community by providing ongoing parenting education to: increase the birth of healthy babies; reduce the possibility of child abuse; and/or neglect and to foster positive parent-child relationships through home visitation.

“Our MOMS program is very unique to the Norwalk area,” says Robert Cashel, FCA President & CEO. “This grant from The Grossman Family Foundation will allow FCA to continue providing education and support for mothers who are looking for ways to create and sustain healthy relationships with their children.”

Over the past three years, 94% of families served in FCA’s Prevention Programs did not have a newly documented case of abuse or neglect with DCF and with the on-going support of the Foundation, the MOMS program has increased capacity and now serves nearly 6 times as many families than the program served in 2011.
“The increase in families positively impacted over the last five years not only demonstrates the need for programs like MOMS, but also speaks to the hard work and training of the FCA staff,” said Cashel.

The substantial award, distributed over three years, will allow FCA to increase staffing and client capacity, while more broadly supporting the various mental health needs of mothers in the program.

The MOMS program functions within FCA’s Family Support & Prevention Services department. Highly trained staff educate parents and provide tools for building strong foundations for their family’s growth. All programs are offered free of charge in English and Spanish to families in the Greater Norwalk area.

Families who want to learn more about the MOMS program or other home visiting services at FCA are encouraged to visit the Agency website atwww.familyandchildrensagency.org or call 203-855-8765 for more information.
