Fifty Years of The Aldrich Museum: Opening Reception Welcomes Seven New Exhibitions

The year-long celebration of The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum’s 50th Anniversary will continue with a free opening reception to welcome the final seven exhibitions at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 19.

This series of exhibitions highlights both the Museum’s legacy and the relationship between the era in which it was founded and the current social, political, and cultural landscape. The presentation includes part two of Standing in the Shadows of Love: The Aldrich Collection 1964–1974—a group exhibition of iconic, historical works that are representative of The Aldrich’s early collection acquired by founder Larry Aldrich, with work by Richard Artschwager, Eva Hesse, Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, and Richard Serra.

New projects by contemporary artists whose work reflects the continuing influence of both art and culture from the 1960s and 1970s will be presented in conversation with the historical pieces: Kate Gilmore: A Roll in the Way; Ernesto Neto: The Body That Gravitates on Me; David Scanavino: Imperial Texture; and Cary Smith: Your Eyes They Turn Me.

In addition, two solo exhibitions will feature current works by artists who showed at The Aldrich during the Museum’s first decade: Mary Beth Edelson: Six Story Gathering Boxes (1972–2014) and Jackie Winsor: With and Within.

The public are invited to meet the exhibiting artists, enjoy exhibition tours, participate in family activities inspired by the work on view, and purchase gourmet food from Ridgefield favorite No.109 Cheese and Wine.

Aldrich members will be afforded a private preview of the new exhibitions at Behind the Scenes on Saturday, October 18, from 6:30 to 8 pm. Artist Cary Smith will talk about his twenty-five-year pursuit of abstraction and outline the inspirations behind this, his first solo Museum exhibition, while guests enjoy cocktails and light refreshments.

The Museum is open from 12 noon to 5 p.m. to view the exhibitions on Sunday, October 19; admission is FREE all day.
