The Loft Artists Gallery Presents “Off The Wall” Solo Exhibition of paintings and drawings by Princess Cureton

March 24 - April 30, 2017

Opening Reception, Friday March 24, 6-8 PM

The Loft Artists Association proudly presents a farewell exhibition by artist Princess Cureton that combine the technique of painting and relief sculpting on canvas and paper that lift the figure from the surface and “Off The Wall”. Cureton will be leaving the LAA this summer and relocating to her new home in North Carolina. An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, March 24th from 6-8 PM and the exhibition is also open to the public during regular gallery hours, Saturdays and Sundays, 1-4:30 PM through April 30, 2017. The Loft Artists Gallery is located at 575 Pacific Street, Stamford CT.

The exhibition is based on metaphors that reflect the very personal and spiritual landscape of the artist’s experiences and is narrated through the figure in surreal background. Her technique of combining acrylic mixed media painting and relief sculpting on the canvas adds an element of surprise, designed to draw the viewer deeper into the artist’s narrative. Cureton uses a variety of processes to coax the figure away from the surface of the canvas, embedding glass, beads, fabric, plastic, sand and material indigenous to the environment in which she is creating. Her work is an autobiography reflecting the consonance and dissonance in life which she shares openly and honestly in resonance with the viewer.” More about the artist can be found at www.princesscureton.com.

A native of Washington D.C., Cureton was an art teacher and Coordinator in the US Virgin Islands for 17 years and recently retired from the Greenwich public schools as an elementary art teacher in 2014. Besides the technical and critical experience gained in her long teaching career, traveling through the Caribbean, Greece, Cyprus, Venezuela, Mexico, China and Japan as a student of other cultures, opened her to experiences that continue to fuel and influence her creativity.

In the Phillips Gallery at LAA, an exhibition entitled ‘Mix of Six” will be displayed simultaneously featuring the works of member artists Anne Salthouse, Maura Shapiro, Phyllis Sinrich, Jody Silver, Julliette Tehrani and Margaret Tsirantonakis.

Now in its 39th year the Loft Artists Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to building connections within Fairfield County’s visual art community and introducing the general public to artists and their work. Their grassroots events attract thousands of visitors throughout the tri-state area and have been recognized by funding agencies, including the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, corporate and private sponsors, the City of Stamford and by visitors who return year after year.
