Connecticut Teacher Shines with Enthusiasm Introducing President Barack Obama

Earlier this month Connecticut received some pretty incredible news. It was announced that Waterbury's John F. Kennedy High School social studies teacher, Jahana Hayes, had been named the 2016 National Teacher of the Year.

Hayes had been named Waterbury Teacher of the Year, and shortly after was recognized nationally. As part of this honor, Hayes had the privilege of going to the White House, with the other finalists, and meeting President Barack Obama.

During the White House ceremony honoring America's finest teachers on Tuesday, May 3rd, Hayes was tasked with introducing President Obama to the podium. At this moment Hayes shined with excitement, enthusiasm, and struggled to contain her joy during her final remarks.

"It is now my privilege..." Hayes paused for a moment, closing her eyes with a big ear to ear grin and began to pound her fists on the podium like a ceremonial drum she was so excited. "I'm sorry don't kick me out," she laughed and continued, "to introduce to you the President of the United States, Barack Obama."

Later in his speech, President Obama said, "You can't be great if you're not enthusiastic," acknowledging Hayes' enthusiasm for the event, as well as for being a teacher.
