Darien Resident, Jean McCormick has passed at 68

Mrs. Jean Heckadon McCormick, 68, passed away Monday, May 9, 2016 at her residence after a 2 year long courageous battle with Melanoma.

Mrs. McCormick was born in Almirante, Panama. She is the daughter of the late Philip and Catherine Simpson Heckadon of Evans, GA. Jean spent most of her formative years in Bakersfield, CA. She graduated from the University of the Pacific with a degree in Education. Jean then earned a Bachelor's in nursing degree from Cornell University followed by a Masters in Nursing from Yale University. She began her nursing career in the Cardio-Thoracic ICU at New York Hospital and soon after moved to Connecticut where she worked for many years in the Primary Care unit at Norwalk Hospital as a nurse practitioner.

As one of the first nurses at Brunswick School in Greenwich, CT, Jean established and implemented medical policies to ensure student safety and compliance with state law. During her 10 + years as a Nurse Practitioner at Westhill High School in Stamford, CT, she lead a student nutrition club, which was highlighted on the CBS morning news toward the end of her tenure. In addition, Jean believed in every student's potential and encouraged underprivileged youth to work hard and dream big. She continued to use her gift as an educator while on faculty at Yale. Jean resided in Darien, CT for over 25 years. During that time, she was an active member of her church, Noroton Presbyterian. Most recently, she retired and settled in Aiken, SC.

Beyond her professional life and accomplishments, Jean was a loving mother, devoted wife, and a beloved daughter. Her commitment to helping others, educating children and caring for the sick speak to her selfless nature and embody her overall passion to making the world a better place. Jean will be greatly missed!
