Darien Police Receive Grant Funding for DUI Enforcement

For the 6th year in a row, The Darien Police have applied for and received grant funding for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) enforcement.  The grant funds are provided for by the Connecticut Department of Transportation.  The grant funding of $54,000 will be used by the Darien Police to conduct aggressive DUI enforcement over the next year, until October of 2015.

The Darien Police intend to work cooperatively with the Stamford Police, who also received grant funding of their own for DUI enforcement, to deploy DUI sobriety checkpoints and roaming patrols.  This is being done in an effort to reduce accidents and injuries caused by drivers who operate under the influence.  The DUI checkpoints and roaming patrols will be conducted at times when the offenses of DUI are most common, predominately nights and weekends.

A mutual aid agreement between the police departments of Darien and Stamford allows us to conduct cooperative enforcement efforts within each other’s jurisdictions.  Having such a mutual agreement allows both Darien and Stamford to pool their resources and thereby increase the effectiveness of these types of enforcement details.  In the past years cooperative efforts such as this have yielded arrests of fugitives from justice, various narcotics violations, wanted persons, weapons violations, a car-jacker, persons operating with suspended driver’s license, vehicles being operated without insurance, as well as persons operating under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
