Pick Up That Pen! Workshops for Writers in Westport and Fairfield

By Gabi Coatsworth

If you’re a writer or would like to be, and you live in Fairfield County, you’re in luck. Westport and Fairfield have more classes, workshops, and seminars for writers than ever before. Those mentioned below may be only a few of them. If you know of any more, please add them in the comments section. Thanks!

They say that everyone has a story to tell, and if you’re planning to start with your own story, you have several choices. The Westport Writers’ Workshop is offering a course called Writing About Your Life: Memoir/Personal Essay. Or dip a toe in the water with a morning workshop on Saturday, Oct. 13: Memoir Writing for the Absolute Beginner.

Fairfield Parks & Recreation department is offering The Art & Craft of Memoir: two sessions (one for newbies and one for people who have already done some writing in this genre) led by Carol Dannhauser. Carol is the founder of the Writers’ Workshop of Fairfield, and she also runs regular workshops at the Connecticut Audubon Birdcraft Museum in Fairfield – call her directly for more info on these (203 374 8343).

If fiction is your thing, the Westport Writers’ Workshop runs several fiction workshops for different levels of writers from the fundamentals to intermediate fiction. In addition there are regular one-off workshops; click here for a full list.

Write Yourself Free, also in Westport, runs regular series of workshops for writers of all types. There are workshops on screenwriting, poetry, songwriting, and books for children, as well as more general ones on the craft of writing.

Last but not least, there’s the Fairfield Public Library, which offers free workshops every week. In addition, on the first and third Friday of each month from 12 – 2 p.m., they run a Writers’ Collaboration in the Library’s Writers’ Room, where you can turn up and write or chat with other writers. On the first Friday of the month, they run a Writers’ Salon from 4 – 6 p.m., with a guest facilitator who provides a jumping-off point for discussions about writing.

There’s no excuse not to write, so pick up that pen or laptop and get going!

Gabi Coatsworth is a British-born writer who has spent half her life living in the United States. Among other things, she maintains a personal blog and one for writers. She lives in Fairfield but has her finger on the pulse of writing throughout Fairfield County.
