First Church Sponsors Fairfield Day of Service, Sept. 21

First Church Congregational invites area residents to work with them for a Day of Service, celebrating the town and the church's 375th Anniversary, on Sunday, September 21st, 2014. As a servant church, First Church has worked with its Outreach Partners to actively assist them in whatever work--generally physical labor--they need to get done. In the past this has been a Sunday of Service involving the whole church. This year it is a community-wide Day of Service "celebrating community together" in its 375th Anniversary Year. Volunteers will assemble at 9 am to meet their project leaders, work on location from 10 am to 4 pm, and come together again at 5:30 pm on the Town Green between the Sun Tavern and the Museum and History Center for a BBQ/Picnic and an interfaith worship service.

First Church has been working with the town establishing a number of service projects which community volunteers can accomplish. The service projects include painting and demolition work on houses owned by Operation Hope, cleaning and repair of Veterans Park, rebuilding/repairing sailboat and kayak racks at Jennings Beach, beach clean-up at Jennings Beach, installing a brick patio at Trefoil Court town-owned senior housing, minor repairs, painting and yard work at several homes of seniors/handicapped residents unable to do this work themselves, cooking three complete dinners for the Operation Hope shelter on Nichols Street. Project leaders, with the expertise required for the job, will be on sites to coordinate the work. Linda Gibbons of First Church has been the liaison with Mark Barnhart, Director of Community and Economic Development for the town; Mark has worked with the various town departments to set up the town designated projects and he has secured supplies and services needed to complete these projects.

To make this Day of Service a success, a lot of people are needed --approximately 250 volunteers-- to work on September 21st and then celebrate together at the BBQ/Picnic in the evening.

Signing up to volunteer is easy. Go to www.Fairfield375.com and click on the "News" tab. On the news page you will see a button for Volunteer Spot. Click on the Volunteer Spot button and you will be taken to the sign up area. You will find simple instructions on how to sign up. Signing up will begin on September 2nd.
