Fairfield, CT -- CancerCare is set to host its 10th Annual Walk/Run for Hope at Jennings Beach, 880 South Benson Road in Fairfield, Conn. on Sunday, September 11, 2016. The Walk/Run for Hope is a series of family-friendly 5K events that raise funds to support CancerCare’s free, professional services provided to anyone affected by cancer.
Walkers and runners of all levels and ages are welcome to participate. Registration and check in begin at 7:45 a.m. The 5K race, which is USATF-sanctioned and certified, begins at 9 a.m. A children’s Fun Run will follow at 10:15 a.m. Both individuals and teams can register in advance at http://community.cancercare.org/walkct.
In Connecticut, CancerCare provides services through its Norwalk office. Two years ago, Michelle Jones of Bridgeport, a young mother, was about to embark on a new career when she faced a devastating breast cancer diagnosis. “CancerCare’s excellent resources, financial assistance and support system helped eliminate some of the hardships that come with a cancer diagnosis,” said Jones. “Everyone at CancerCare was always so caring, understanding and genuinely ready to help in any way possible.” While she was ill, her coworkers from MBI Inc. walked in her honor in the Walk/Run for Hope. This year, Jones will participate in the event and walk as a survivor.
This community-based event brings together friends and families to walk or run in memory of those they have lost to cancer, honor survivors and support those who are currently facing a cancer diagnosis. Registration fees are a $40 minimum donation per adult (13 and older); $20 minimum donation per child (12 and under); or $10 for the Fun Run only. All participants will receive a commemorative Walk/Run for Hope t-shirt. Awards will be presented to the top male and female participants in both the overall race and age-based categories. The event will be held rain or shine and parking is free.
“Our tenth year of this event is an important milestone,” said Sandra Tripodi, LCSW, CancerCare’s senior director of community engagement. “We are very grateful to the Fairfield community, the event committee and the many volunteers for their support and dedication every year.”
CancerCare is grateful to the following event sponsors and community partners: Teva Oncology, Serendipity Magazine, TMK Sports & Entertainment, AMR, Fleet Feet Sports Stamford, The J House Greenwich, Lamar, O’Neill’s Pub and Restaurant, Party People, sound RUNNER, Source Coffeehouse, The Pantry and Whole Foods Market.
