Fairfield Free Clam Clinic Set for Aug. 2

The Town of Fairfield's Shellfish Commission will host a free clam clinic event at Sasco Hill Beach, 1401 Sasco Hill Road, on August 2, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for local residents to learn about Fairfield's natural shellfish resources. A rain date for the event is scheduled for August 3, at 10:00 a.m.

"This event provides an opportunity for Fairfield residents, including children, to experience the basics of harvesting shellfish while learning the importance of Fairfield's natural shellfish ecosystem," said Robert Bilek, Chairman of the Shellfish Commission.

Participants will be taught harvesting techniques and can keep their own catch. Gear, including clam rakes and gauges, will be provided if needed. Participants are encouraged to bring their own towels. There will also be an opportunity to sample locally prepared clam chowder.

The Sasco Hill Beach Shellfish Bed was recently restocked with more than 11,000 clams for residents to harvest. No clamming permits are required for the clinic, but permits will be sold for future use.

Fairfield First Selectman Mike Tetreau said, "I encourage all of our citizens to visit Sasco Beach to experience this fun recreational activity which is not offered by most towns."

No reservation is required. The event is weather dependent so please call the Shellfish Hotline at (203) 256-3074 to ensure the Sasco Hill Beach Recreational Bed is open.

For more information, see the clam clinic flyer or contact the Fairfield Conservation Department at (203) 256-3071.
