Pequot Library Seeks Annual Art Show Entries

Southport, CT – Pequot Library invites all artists to submit their work to its 17th Annual Art Show. The Call for Entries Deadline is Friday, October 3, 2014. This year's Art Show theme is: The Story of Art. Artists are storytellers, inviting viewers to imagine their own stories. Pequot Library invites artists working in all mediums to share their art in this community exhibition.

All entries are accepted and the Art Show is judged for "Best in Show." "Best in Show" receives a 2015 solo exhibition in the Perkin Gallery. The judges this year are Ryan Odinak and Jane Sutherland.

Ryan Odinak is an independent arts consultant, artist and writer. She is the former Executive Director of both the Cultural Alliance of Fairfield County and the Fairfield Arts Council. As an arts leader, Odinak created programs and services for artists, arts audiences, and arts and cultural organizations. An active arts advocate, Odinak serves on the executive committee of the CT Arts Alliance. Odinak attended the Hartford Art School and Wesleyan University where she studied painting and art history, as well as aesthetics and the philosophy of art. She has exhibited her artwork in CT, NY, and throughout New England. Odinak has been a juror for numerous arts festivals and exhibitions in Fairfield County.

Jane Sutherland is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College and is an alumna of the residency program at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. After earning a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Universidad de las Americas in Mexico City, Mexico she began a teaching career at Fairfield University where she is Associate Professor Emeritus. Since 1998 she has taught in the summer seminars at the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Her work has been widely exhibited including the Mexican American Cultural Institute Mexico City, Tasende Gallery, La Jolla CA, DeCordova Museum, General Electric World Headquarters, Silvermine Guild Art Center, Sherry French Gallery, NY, Flint Institute of Art, MI, and Southport Galleries, CT.

Pequot Library is happy to be part of National Arts and Humanities Month in October. The arts are a part of our lives each and every day, and the nation takes the whole month of October to commemorate and celebrate the arts in big ways, it's National Arts & Humanities Month - the largest annual celebration for the arts and humanities in the nation! Americans for the Arts encourages organizations to offer free events in their communities.

Pequot Library's 17th Annual Art Show Weekend consists of art exhibitions, events, programs, and activities for all ages. Admission is free and open to the public for Art Show viewing, Friday, October 17 – Sunday, October 19, 2014, during regular library hours.

On Friday, October 17, from 4pm - 5:30pm, there will be a Children's Activity: The Art of the Selfie. This is a
hands-on workshop presented by The Painted Bird for children to create self-portraits as unique as the artists themselves. Ages 5+ registration required, plus small materials fee. The Painted Bird creates programs in arts and crafts for kids of all ages. Art Show viewing and buying open all day Friday, October 17, 10am - 6pm.

Saturday, October 18, Art Gallery Afternoon Experience. Several local art galleries open their doors to Art Show patrons - ARC Fine Art, Amy Simon Fine Art, J. Russell Jinishian Gallery, Southport Galleries, Troy Fine Art. Check with local galleries for times and details.

On Saturday, October 18, 6:30pm - 9:30pm there will be a Fundraising Gala. Enjoy an evening of fine art, cocktails & hors d'oeuvres, and a variety of silent auction items sure to please all. Catering by Collyer Catering & Market of Westport. Art Show viewing and buying open all day Saturday, October 18, 10am - 4pm.

Have your own antiques and collectibles appraised on Sunday, October 20, from 11am - 4pm at the Appraisal Day: Antiques, Fine Art and Collectibles. Bring your treasures to Pequot Library; experts from NYC-based Heritage Auctions will be on hand to evaluate your heirloom items. $20 per piece with online registration/$25 per piece at the door. Advance registration encouraged. Art Show viewing and buying open all day Sunday, October 20, 11am - 5pm.
