Westport Artists to Celebrate Max's, Sept. 5

Max's, the legendary art supply store and beloved social hot spot for area artists at 68 Post Road East, Westport, may be closing for business on August 30 but its story doesn't end there. Max's will open its doors one last time on September 5, from 6 to 9 pm, for a juried pop up art exhibit featuring the works of some of the area's most talented artists.

"Westport Area Artists Celebrate Max's" is being organized by Amy Kaplan, a long time customer and local artist. The show has been made possible by the support of Shirley Mellor, Max's owner, Nina Royce, a long time Max's employee, John Hartwell and the Westport Town Democratic Committee, the Westport Downtown Merchants Association, Parkway Liquor and Rockwell Art and Framing.

Since 1956, Max's Art Supplies has offered a comprehensive inventory of quality art supplies along with a place for artists to find encouragement, advice, and each other. They have also offered artists the opportunity to show their work in Max's front windows at the foot of Main Street and Post Road. Any sales at the event will generate a 10% commission for Max's, in recognition of their generous support for local artists over the years.

"Max's has been a pillar in the local art community," says event coordinator Amy Kaplan. "I can't think of a more fitting send off for Max's than this show. It gives the artists a chance to show and sell their work and also to reminisce about the role Max's has played in their lives and development as artists."

All interested Fairfield County artists are invited to submit original work in any medium for jurying into the show. The event will be free and open to the public. The group is looking for help in organizing the event as well as event sponsors to donate food and beverages.
