Gov. Malloy to Speak at Eagle Hill School, Mon. Sept. 29

Southport, CT – In support of National Dyslexia Awareness Month this October, Eagle Hill-Southport (EHS), an independent co-educational day school for children with learning disabilities (LD), will host Connecticut’s Governor Dannel P. Malloy who will discuss the impact of his learning differences through his elementary and middle school years. The program, on Sept. 29th, from 6-7pm, is free and open to the public and will be held at Eagle Hill-Southport.

“We are honored that Governor Malloy is part of our school’s Community & Education Lecture Series this fall,” said Benjamin Powers, Headmaster of EHS. “His personal account of how he turned his learning challenges early in childhood into a life of accomplishment is inspiring. His contributions as a leader in our community are a symbol of hope and positive thinking for many of our own LD students, and their parents.”

“As a school, we are committed to raising awareness about learning disabilities and to serve as a resource to our families and the greater community,” said Dr. Hallie A. Buckingham, Director of Community Outreach for EHS. “Our lecture series coincides with National Dyslexia Awareness Month with the intention of educating the public and spreading the word about our school as a resource.”

EHS’s Community and Education Lecture Series will continue with a talk on Wednesday, October 8th with author David Flink. He will speak about his LD journey and discuss his newly-released book, “Thinking Differently: Reframing Learning for a New Generation.” Mr. Flink is the co-founder of Eye-to-Eye, a National LD Mentoring Program. His lecture starts at 7:00 pm and will include a book signing following the presentation.  Books will be available for purchase. Guests must register for both events via Eventbrite.com.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, Eagle Hill-Southport is a non-profit, independent, co-educational day school designed for bright and capable students experiencing academic difficulties because of a learning disability. It is an individualized, student-centered program that works to develop a foundation of academic skills and self-advocacy.  The school’s ultimate goal is to remediate a child’s skills, build their self-esteem, and help them transition into a more traditional academic environment.  EHS accepts children between the ages of 7-14 years old who are diagnosed with a language-based learning disability. EHS was founded in 1985 and is located at 214 Main Street, Southport, CT in the historic Pequot School building on Southport Harbor.
