Fairfield Student Art Goes "Green" for Fairfield's Earth Day Celebration

As part of this year’s Fairfield's Earth Day Celebration, the 2nd annual “Art Contest” challenges elementary, middle school and high school students to get artistic about their hopes and thoughts on our environment.  All drawings, paintings, photos and videos will be shown on Saturday, April 25th at Fairfield Warde High School (at the Fairfield's Earth Day Celebration venue).

Emma Gleysteen, a junior at Fairfield Warde High School and chair of the 2015 edition of the Art Contest, is excited to see what the contestants come up with, commenting, "Using art is the perfect way for kids to express their thoughts about the environment or how we can make our town a healthier, safer place.”

Highlights of the Fairfield's Earth Day Celebration 2015 event will be a life-size replica of the Gustave Whitehead aircraft (a local invention that flew two years prior to the Wright Brothers) and the Art Contest.  In addition, the all-day event offers an impressive palette of exhibits on clean and renewable alternative energy choices, environmental conservation, organic gardening, finding healthy, organic foods and products and recycling – not to mention music and entertainment.

Asked about the contest, Mary Hogue, Fairfield Earth Day Committee chair, explained, “Last year, we wanted to do something fun. One of the students came up with the idea of an art contest, which turned out to be a smashing success – and a lot of fun!”

Making every day more sustainable

The commitment of local students – from pre-K through high school – has always been a big part of Fairfield's Earth Day Celebration event. Whether as exhibitors, entertainers on the stage or helping to organize and volunteer during the day of the event, kids make it happen.
