Local Cancer Survivor Fights Back through Relay For Life Movement

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1.6 million people will be diagnosed with cancer this year. For Don of Norwalk, the statistics became personal when he learned he was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2004. He has been cancer free for the past ten-and-a-half years now and continues to fight with the help of his family and ACS.

Don has been involved with Relay For Life of Fairfield for the past four years, as a cancer survivor and also as a volunteer. It has been a very moving experience for him and will continue to be part of Relay For Life for many years to come. Don also volunteers at the American Cancer Society office in Norwalk, Connecticut four days a week and has been doing so for about a year now and truly enjoys giving back!

The American Cancer Society estimates that as of January 1, 2014, there were nearly 14.5 million cancer survivors just here in the United States. Thousands of cancer survivors participate in American Cancer Society Relay For Life events each year around the country and around the world. Survivors and their caregivers take the first lap of every event as community members cheer them on and celebrate the progress that has been made against cancer.

Relay For Life is a community event where teams and individuals camp out at a school, park or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path from six to up to 24 hours. Each team has at least one participant on the track at all times and participates in fundraising in the months leading up to the event. Four million people participated in more than 6,000 events in 20 countries worldwide last year.

This year’s Relay For Life of Fairfield will be held on Saturday, June 6th beginning at 6 pm at Fairfield Ludlowe High School. Registration is free and is open to survivors, participants and teams.
