Annual 4th of July Bike Parade & Lawn Games at Pequot Library

Southport, CT – Pequot Library’s Annual 4th of July Bike Parade and Lawn Games will again commence at the Five Corners in Southport Village with decorated bikes, scooters and wagons on Saturday, July 4, at 10:00am. A street parade will weave its way to the Great Lawn of Pequot Library where fun and games begin. Kids can get their faces painted, participate in traditional sack races or engage in a hula hoop contest, Revolutionary Relay, crafts and/or American History trivia contest. Hot dogs and drinks will be available and no registration is required. This event is free and open to all ages.

Tying this event to literature, American writer and Nobel Prize laureate, William Faulkner, said, “We must be free not because we claim freedom, but because we practice it.” American humorist, Erma Louise Bombeck achieved great popularity for her newspaper column and published 15 books, most of which became bestsellers. Bombeck is quoted as saying, “You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.” Come enjoy a community tradition in the spirit of the day on Pequot Library’s Great Lawn.
