Free Health & Wellness Series at Pequot Library Starts Aug. 13

Southport, CT – Now is the time to focus on your health and wellness. Pequot Library has created a series of six free programs from A to Z running from August through October. The series kicks off with a Zumba Class on Thursday, August 13, from 6:30pm - 7:45pm. Zumba classes are energetic dance fitness classes that make you feel amazing. All programs in the series are in collaboration with Interim HealthCare.

Pequot Library and Interim HealthCare team up to offer Basic Zumba classes with professional instructor and certified nutritionist Nora Patumanon, MS, CDN. This is a Latin-inspired, easy-to-follow, calorie-burning fitness program that helps make fitness fun. No experience necessary, and this class is open to all levels. Registration is required and the class is free and open to the public.

Patumanon specializes in chronic disease prevention and health promotion. She offers nutrition counseling for individuals of all ages and medical conditions who seek wellness through nutrition and lifestyle modifications. It is her passion to reach out to the community and help individuals take control of their health. Two additional classes will be offered: one on Friday evening, September 11 at 6:30pm, the other on Monday, October 26 at 6:30pm.

Other classes in this health and wellness series include Ask the Nurse and Free Blood Pressure Screenings, on Tuesday, August 18, 2015, from 11:00am - 12:30pm. Madeline Tirado, RN from Interim Healthcare provides an hour within which the public can come in for free blood pressure screenings, from 11:00am to 12:00pm. Immediately following, there will be a 30-minute opportunity for the public to ask questions. Ask Madeline your health questions in her areas of experience: diabetes, heart failure, edema management, wound care, disease prevention and healthier lifestyles.

Nurse Tirado has been a registered nurse for over 20 years. She recently joined Interim HealthCare of Fairfield County as the Director of HealthCare Services. Her primary focus is the provision of quality care and clinical excellence. As a lifelong resident of Fairfield County, she is motivated to give back to her community. No registration is required and the entire program is free and open to the public.

On Wednesday, August 19 from 11:00am – 12:30pm, the public is invited to chat with social worker Arthur Gottlieb, LCSW, CSA, during a program called The Sandwich Generation. Explore the emotional and financial challenges for those "sandwiched" between their caregiving responsibilities. "The Sandwich Generation" refers to those tasked with caring for their aging parents as well as their young children. It may also include providing care for grandparents, parents, young children or parents, adult children and grandchildren. In this interactive chat, participants will discuss how to balance the needs of others with one's own personal life.

No registration is required and the program is free and open to the public. Instructor Gottlieb is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in CT and earned the nationwide title of Certified Senior Advisor. As a frequent guest writer for Today's Caregiver Magazine, Mr. Gottlieb lectures throughout Fairfield and Westchester Counties. He maintains a private practice in Norwalk, CT and offers pro-bono counseling services for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. For the past ten years, he has focused his professional efforts toward reaching out and addressing the growing needs of aging veterans and their families.

The public can also join Chat with a Dietician on Tuesday, August 25, from 11:00am - 12:30pm. Learn smart food choices for healthy aging. This information session is led by a certified nutritionist to help older adults gain a better understanding of nutrition and healthier food choices. It will include nutrients to know, healthy eating plans, food safety and shopping tips. No registration is required, and it is free and open to the public. Led by the aforementioned Nora Patumanon.
