Music for Youth Fall Season Starts with The Mikado

Music for Youth and Pequot Library will launch the fall season with The Mikado performed by New York Gilbert & Sullivan's "Wand'ring Minstrels", Saturday, September 26th, 2 PM, at Pequot Library, 720 Pequot Avenue, Southport, CT 06890.

NYGASP (New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players) is a professional repertory company giving vitality to the living legacy of Gilbert and Sullivan through performance and education.

What child wouldn’t love a story about characters with names like Yum-Yum, Peep-Bo, Nanki-Poo, Pish-Tush and Ko-Ko (which means pickles in Japanese)? When W.S. Gilbert wrote the story for the popular musical comedy The Mikado, set in a make-believe version of Japan, he deliberately chose names that sounded like children’s nursery terms. These lovable characters have been portrayed in a wide range of styles, from an all-black version at a World’s Fair in the 1930s to a cartoon version on TV featuring Alvin and the Chipmunks. The Wand’ring Minstrels (who take their name from a song title in The Mikado) will tell the story in the show’s original format, but with narration and interactive explanation meant to involve young audience members. Singers play multiple roles, donning several costumes each, while singing such memorable tunes from Sullivan’s catchy score as “I’ve got a little list”, “Three little maids from school are we”, “Here’s a how-de-do”, “The flowers that bloom in the spring”,  “Let the punishment fit the crime” and “Titwillow".
