FAIRFIELD, CT: The Eunice Dennie Burr Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will be coordinating a service project in honor of the 125th anniversary of the founding of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, which is being celebrated throughout this year. Comprised of the descendants of the Patriots who won American independence, the DAR was founded on October 11, 1890 as a service organization to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism.
Members of the local Eunice Dennie Burr Chapter will be collaborating with the staff of the Fairfield Public Library’s Main Branch on a “Read-A-Thon and More!” on Sunday, October 11, from 8AM to 8:30PM. This 12.5-hour service project, which will be held at the Old Fairfield Academy on 635 Old Post Rd., Fairfield, will include, in addition to a traditional read-a-thon, such activities as two Victorian Teas (for all ages); story hours all day; period crafts; a veterans’ roundtable discussion; colonial games; a patriotic sing along with the Mendelssingers; and much more. “Our chapter, which was organized in 1894, carries out the important mission of the National Society here on the local level,” said Chapter Regent Dr. Linda S. Paslov. “We’re excited to demonstrate the vibrancy and contributions of today’s DAR by serving our local community as Daughters have been doing throughout the nation for 125 years.”
There are currently nearly 180,000 members of the DAR serving in approximately 3,000 chapters across the nation and in several foreign countries. More than 940,000 women have joined the organization since its founding 125 years ago.
“Here in Fairfield, the Eunice Dennie Burr Chapter, for example, serves by engaging in historic preservation projects (including the Powder House and Franklin Mile Marker, as well as local patriots’ gravestone cleaning); supporting veterans (on Veterans’ Day, on Independence day and through outreach activities, most recently donating bedding and a flag pole to the Pfc. Nicholas A, Maderas Home for women veterans); awarding high school and middle schools students Good Citizen Awards; and making Old Academy School Room available to school groups and the community for tours throughout the year. We are proud to carry out DAR’s mission to celebrate our American way of life,” said Paslov. “All women who can document descent from a Revolutionary War Patriot are encouraged to consider the many benefits of joining. We are eager to welcome new members to our chapter, and we have volunteers available to help them research and complete their genealogy in order to apply for membership.”
