Talk with Artist Carlos Dominguez at Pequot Library Dec. 11

Southport, CT – Pequot Library will host a Conversation with the Artist: Carlos Jesus Martinez Dominguez on Friday, December 11, from Noon - 1:00pm. The talk is expected to be dynamic, educational, and possibly even controversial, according to organizers. This program is free and all are welcome.

Dominguez will discuss his mixed-media collage, titled We Call Him Colon Nosotros le llamamos Colon, which was created in response to Pequot Library’s “Pages from Pequot” exhibition, Exploring America: Christopher Columbus.

To create his mixed-media collage, Mr. Dominguez copied images from Pequot Library’s exhibition and either juxtaposed Columbus’s image with poignant questions such as “Idiot Savant?” or obliterated Columbus’ image entirely, adding the face of a Dominican carnival mask of the devil. This portrayal adds insight to what the artist says is “the complexity of the blunt thievery and genocide that resulted from Columbus’ discoveries.” The public will learn new and different points of view about Christopher Columbus.

Carlos says that before he was a visual artist he was a debater. “I am a creative person who loves to draw, but I also love to engage in conversations about identity, and how we identify ourselves as a nation, and as people with different ethnicities," he says.

Dominguez draws inspiration from the cultures and related histories of Hip Hop, NYC and the Caribbean. He was born in North Carolina, USA, in 1976. “My work conveys my anxiety and my thrill regarding history, how that history presently manifests itself, and the present’s implications for the future. While I have much respect and pride for my cultures, I would rather shine a bright light on things some believe we should re-analyze as opposed to playing the cheerleader for them," he says.

His work has been showcased in the exhibition Caribbean: Crossroads of the World, spanning three museumsthe Studio Museum in Harlem and El Museo del Barrio, both in Manhattan, and across the East River, the Queens Museum of Art. In size, cultural scope and freshness of material, the three-museum exhibition was the biggest art event of its kind in New York, itself one of the largest Caribbean cities.

Dominquez’s talk will inspire debate, inquiry and interaction, and engage the audience. This artist's talk is part of the larger exhibition in the "Pages from Pequot" series from Pequot Library's Special Collections, Exploring America: Christopher Columbus. It runs from now to Friday, January 15, 2016. It is open during normal library hours.
