Southport, CT – Pequot Library announces a plethora of creative and enriching programs for all ages during their 19th Annual Art Show. In celebration of National Arts and Humanities Month, there will be six days of activities and events for people of all ages. There will be a Preview Benefit Party, a Pequot Quick Paint and Sale, two children's art workshops -- Cerealism: Pop Art Workshop and Finding Your Artist Within, a Gallery Talk, “Artists Thrive” and Reception, the Community Art Exhibition, and an Artists and Collectors Party - all wrapped up in six fabulous days of fun and fundraising. Funds raised provide crucial support for programs and library services.
First, tickets are on sale now for the big fundraiser scheduled for Thursday, October 13, 2016, from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. There will be drinks & bites by Susan Kane Catering; extraordinary gifts and priceless experiences offered in the Silent Auction; a Viewer’s Choice activity where party-goers vote on Best in Show while sampling a vodka bar or a special pomegranate cocktail from vodka sponsor Broken Shed; and of course the chance to be the first to view and purchase a variety of high-quality fine art from the “Art & Community: Revealing the Art Within” art show, featuring over 100 original pieces to choose from. Artist Chic is the suggested attire and tickets start at $75/each at pequotlibrary.org. The honoree of this year’s art show is The Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation.
The 19th Annual Art Show is then on view from October 14 - 18, 2016, free and open to the public during normal library hours. A program for children ages 5 - 15, Cerealism: Pop Art Workshop on Friday, October 14, 2016, from 4:30pm - 6:00pm is back at Pequot Library by popular demand. Led by Michael Albert, New York pop artist and inventor of "Cerealism." Albert has been creating art since his college days at New York University, where he studied business. His art has evolved from doodles and Pen & Ink, to serious wax oil drawings, to the cubist mosaic cereal box collages he has become known for. In the past several years he has been creating large scale "epic" collage works on various themes including historical, biblical, literary, musical, lyrical, botanical, mathematical and geographical. Albert travels extensively throughout the country, offering collage art workshops for all ages at libraries and museums. Save those cereal boxes to bring, and make creative, collaged pieces of art using recycled packaging. Attendees receive a signed art poster from the artist. Registration is required and fee starts at $15 per child, visit pequotlibrary.org for details.
On Saturday, October 15, 2016, from 10:00am - 12:00pm, Pequot Library’s Great Lawn will turn into artists’ studios during Pequot Quick Paint for Artists. Artists bring their own easels and supplies, choose their own spot to set up and paint outdoors (Plein Air). They then have the opportunity to immediately display their recently created painting* from 12:30pm - 2:30pm, *$100 per work/75% to Artist. Registration is required online at pequotlibrary.org or at the Front Desk of Pequot Library but there is no registration fee.
Also on Saturday, October 15, 2016, kids ages 6 – 12 can find their own inner artist during Finding Your Artist Within workshop from 1:00pm - 3:00pm. Everyone is an artist! This workshop awakens the artist in all, by developing "the courage to create" using oil pastels and watercolor techniques. Kathy Watcke, local artist (BFA in painting/sculpture), helps kids explore their creativity in mixed media. Kids can dress for a possible outdoor component. Registration is required at pequotlibrary.org and the fee starts at $15 per child.
Pequot Library’s Art Show weekend ends with a free and open to the public Gallery Talk and Sherry in the Stacks
on Sunday, October 16, 2016, from 3:00pm - 5:00pm. The public is invited to “Artists Thrive” to hear Michelle Knapick, President of the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation, and Stephanie J. Coakley, Executive Director of Pequot Library, discuss arts service organizations which support artist careers through business and how the narrative on how artists are viewed and valued in society is changing.
But wait, there’s more! The 19th Annual Art Show continues for viewing (and purchasing) through October 18, 2016. On Tuesday, October 18, from 5pm – 7pm, there will be an Artist and Collectors Party. Artists, collectors, and potential collectors mingle and mix during this informal "ending reception" to the 19th Annual Art Show.
