Southport, CT -- Pequot Library, in partnership with Music for Youth, presents the Haven Quartet at its next Free Young Person’s Concert on March 11th, 2 pm at Pequot Library. Doors will open at 1:40pm.
The Haven String Quartet have been featured in the New York Times and on WNPR and sought after for both their command on the concert stage and comfort in the classroom. Its four members represent the nation’s top conservatories and bring world-class chamber music to the region each year through their full season of recitals, workshops, and impromptu pop-up performances.
As the permanent quartet-in-residence of Music Haven, the Haven String Quartet spearheads a nationally recognized, free after-school lessons program for more than 80 students from New Haven’s most under-served neighborhoods. The HSQ and Music Haven provide their students with more than 2,500 contact hours per year through one-on-one lessons, group classes, coaching for student chamber groups, and the Harmony in Action youth orchestra. Music Haven and the Haven String Quartet’s program has been recognized as a top 50 after-school arts program in the country by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities five years in a row.
The HSQ also brings its passion and skill to frequent workshops and non-traditional performances, both in New Haven and throughout the East Coast. The Haven Quartet has been an integral part of the Music for Youth Residency and Exchange program in Bridgeport presenting programs to the 3rd and 4th grade and, in addition, coaching and mentoring the students in the 7th and 8th grade orchestras. Through an integrated dual role as professional musicians and teaching artists, members of the quartet embody Music Haven’s mission to build vibrant urban community through performance and music education that empowers young people, their families, and professional musicians.
Each quartet member is an exemplary performer who also enjoys the work of a teaching artist. Having graduated from institutions such as Yale University, Juilliard School, New England Conservatory, Rice University, Eastman School of Music, and Cleveland Institute of Music, each member has concertized internationally and now each member enjoys a successful career as performers and teachers.
A master class will follow the Haven String Quartet's concert for advanced ensemble students. Pre-registration is required for participation in the master class. Music for Youth’s mission is to foster the love and knowledge of live music in young people. The concert in March is FREE for adults attending with children. Adults attending without children are asked to make a goodwill donation that helps to sustain future programs. No tickets or advanced registration is required to attend the concert.
