WHS Presents Monument Madness, April 20

Westport, CT -- On April 20 at Noon, walk back in time to the turn of the 20th century with Town Curator Kathleen Motes Bennewitz. Ms. Bennewitz will talk about The Minute Man Monument and its unveiling in 1910 as a commemoration of the colonists’ heroic efforts in the Danbury Raid.

Learn how this iconic symbol of our town joined other monuments commemorating Revolutionary War battles at Concord and Lexington as a way to instill civic and national pride in the founding of our country for citizens still haunted by the events of the Civil War and coping with unprecedented immigration.

This lecture is part of the WHS’ month-long observance of the 240th anniversary of the British Raid on Danbury, which began April 25, 1777 with the landing of 1,800 Redcoats and Loyalists at Compo Beach. First Selectman James Marpe has proclaimed April “American Revolution Month in Westport” in recognition of the raid’s impact on the American Revolution in Connecticut.
