How to Start An Art Collection

Fairfield, CT – The art world is often described as sexy and sophisticated, but it is also opaque, and starting an art collection can seem daunting and intimidating. Many people wish to start their own collections, but often don’t know where to start.  Now three organizations are joining together to help provide the answers.

On Wednesday, September 6th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, would-be collectors (as well as experienced collectors and interior designers) are invited to the Elisa Contemporary Art Salon on 353 S. Pine Creek Road in Fairfield to learn about how to start collecting art. Wine and cheese will be served as guests browse art and then get to listen to Lisa Cooper, founder of Elisa Contemporary Art, and Beth Harrington, senior vice president of Chilton & Chadwick.

The evening is being presented by Elisa Contemporary Art, What Women Want Networking and Chilton & Chadwick.   Diane James Home, Floral Couture, is a sponsor.

This is a free event but space is very limited and RSVP is a must:

A lot of people think they need a lot of money in order to start a really beautiful art collection,” said Lisa Cooper, owner,  Elisa Contemporary Art. “But that isn’t the case. You don’t need one million dollars.  It can often start just a few hundred.”

The evening was inspired by requests from members of What Women Want – a National women’s networking group whose Fairfield chapter offers monthly informative seminars from Greenwich to Fairfield.

So many of our members are smart, savvy, successful women in their own rights, but many are intimidated by starting an art collection,” said Christine Finch Oleynick, the head of the Fairfield Chapter of What Women Want. “I think what people will learn on September 6 is that starting a collection is easier than you think, and I can’t wait for everyone to learn from Lisa and Beth.”

The art market can be divided in to what are called the primary market and the secondary market. The primary market focuses on living artists, from emerging through late career.

Beth Harrington, an art dealer on the Upper East Side of Manhattan for 37 years and now the senior vice president of Chilton & Chadwick, based in Greenwich, will speak to the secondary market – or works which are being resold at galleries or auctions.

If you are going to create a collection, you’re probably going to have both inexpensive as well as expensive pieces. Buying in the secondary market has a whole set of different rules than the primary market, and guests will get a real sense of what to look out for and how to protect themselves,” said Harrington.

The event is open to the public, but reservations are required as there is limited space. To RSVP, e-mail Christine@ChiltonAndChadwick.com or Lisa@ElisaArt.com by September 1.
