Darien's Geary Gallery to Show Julie Van Norden's Work in Nov.

Darien, CT - This November, the Geary Gallery of Darien presents “Inspired by the Sea,” featuring the contemplative seascapes and landscapes of Westport, CT painter, Julie van Norden. Her exhibit runs November 1 – 30 at the Geary Gallery located at 576 Boston Post Road in Darien.

Featured Artist, November: Julie van Norden

Inspired by an art-loving mother, Julie van Norden has been interested in the subject her whole life, but didn’t study art in school. The New York City native instead went into advertising, and it was only in her 20s that she started painting.

After joining the Art Students League and taking a sabbatical to paint in the south of France through the Cleveland Institute of Art, she eventually left advertising to pursue her true passion, and has been painting ever since.

Van Norden began her art career in earnest in 1986. She started her career painting portraits, working out of a studio on New York’s Union Square. Although she has studied with many teachers at different institutions, her primary influences were Hilary H. Holmes and Harvey Dinnerstein, two well-known figurative painters at the world-renowned Art Students League of New York.

Her work can be found in collections from Texas to New York to England. A majority of her paintings are portraits—and she is a member of Portraits, Inc., a professional company matching individuals and companies with highly skilled portraitists. She is also a member of Wilson Avenue Loft Artists (WALA).

Working out of a new studio in South Norwalk, CT, Julie still paints portraits, but her current work focuses on landscapes and seascapes.

Van Norden has been featured in many shows, most recently, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts’ 106th Annual Exhibition, held this past June and July, and the 105th Annual Exhibition in 2016. She has earned multiple juried exhibits and awards, including:

  •        Award of Merit, Portrait Society of America annual competition, 2003

  •        Hull’s Art Supply Prize, Brush and Palette Club, 2002

  •        Finalist, American Artist magazine portrait competition, 1995

  •        Merit Scholarship, Art Students League, 1994, 1995

  •        Ralph Weiler Prize, National Academy, 1993

Julie van Norden’s exhibit runs through November 30 and her paintings are available for acquisition. All are welcome and admission is free.
