ServiceCorps Fellows to Host BBQ for Op Hope Shelter Clients, June 22

Fairfield, CT -- ServiceCorps is a new program, similar to Teach for America, wherein leading companies allow new college hires to defer their start date by a year to serve in a variety of ways and make a social impact. There are 12 founding Fellows from colleges including UC Berkeley, Indiana University, Notre Dame, SMU, etc. who have secured jobs at GE and Citi, and were selected to be part of this inaugural group.

The 12 Fellows spent the Tuesday morning June 21st tending the garden at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church on Hill Farm Rd. The food grown at this farm is donated to local food pantries, including Operation Hope’s Food Pantry.

It’s remarkable that these companies allow deferrals, a true testament to the faith they place in the leadership capabilities of these new graduates and in the founder of ServiceCorps, Matt Ronen. Read more about him here: http://www.servicecorps.org/mattstory/

Wednesday, June 22, from 5:30pm-6:30pm, the Fellows will be at the park across the street from Operation Hope’s Shelter (50 Nichols St, Fairfield), preparing and serving a BBQ to feed Op Hope's 50 Shelter residents. They are challenged with a $300 budget and time constraints (a la Top Chef and The Apprentice) to create a warm, welcoming, engaging and fun event for the Shelter residents.
