Westport Y to be ACS Enrollment Site for New Cancer Prevention Study

The Westport Weston Family Y has been selected by the American Cancer Society as an enrollment site for volunteers interested in participating in a major new Cancer Prevention Study.

Known as the Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3), the long-term research project is the nation's largest study of the causes of cancers. Those eligible to participate include anyone who:

Is between 30 and 65 years old;
Has never been diagnosed with cancer (not including basal or squamous cell skin cancer);
Is willing to make a long-term commitment to the study, which involves completing periodic follow-up surveys at home.

The study begins with an appointment at the Westport Weston Family Y on Tuesday, November 19, between 8 am and 12 noon. To enroll, please visit cancer.org/cps3NE, or call 888-604-5888. The Family Y is located at 59 Post Road East in downtown Westport.

At the Nov. 19 appointment, participants will be asked to read and sign an informed consent form, complete a brief written survey, have their waist measured and give a small blood sample drawn by a trained, certified phlebotomist. CPS-3 is not a clinical study, so participants will not receive individual blood test results.

Upon completion of the initial enrollment steps, the American Cancer Society will mail follow-up surveys every few years to update your information. The Society has multiple procedures in place to safeguard personal information that is collected.

To learn more about the Cancer Prevention Study-3, attend the Society's kick-off informational meeting on Wednesday, October 16, 6-7 pm. The meeting will take place in Room 137 of Fairfield University's Bannow Science Center, 1073 N. Benson Road, Fairfield, CT. Please RSVP by Oct. 15 to john.watkins@cancer.org or 203-563-1536.
