K's Korner: Why is Autumn Spectacular?

Krushangi Maisuria is the editor of HamletHub's TeenTimes and a frequent contributor to Fairfield HamletHub. In this installment, she writes about the wonder of Autumn...

Each season is beautiful and amazing, but perhaps autumn is the most spectacular. The scene outside most windows in New England is breathtaking this time of year, but we get so busy with our everyday lives, that we need to remind ourselves to take a moment to appreciate this beauty.

Take a deep breath, look up at the melancholy sky and smile in wonder at the beauty around you.

The most distinctive thing about autumn is the sight of the leaves, of course. Just as autumn is a season caught between summer and winter, the leaves are caught between a myriad of colors. They are splattered with pumpkin oranges and poppy greens, sometimes with even a tinge of scarlet peeking from the corners. I love how some of these leaves are entangled in the bare, black branches, while others are carelessly drifting towards weathered sidewalks. As wonderful is the way the sunlight peeks through the leafy canopy of gold and crimson, as if setting the stage for a star.

Isn’t autumn the grand finale of the entire year? It’s the time when the colors burst everywhere, as if nature has been saving up all of its spectacular beauty for the moment. In autumn, every little drop of that beauty bursts through.

But beauty is not the only thing that defines autumn. Autumn is the beginning of the end. The trees are shedding their spring leaves and preparing for winter. Just like the trees, people are preparing for the end of the year as well. I’ve never been fond of endings, but somehow, autumn is an ending that is hard not to appreciate, just because it is so beautiful.

So next time you are frantically walking along a crowded street and the hint of an orange and red leaf catches your eye, stop, even if just for a simple moment, to appreciate nature.
