SHU Students Push Anti-Binge Drinking Message

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Students at Sacred Heart University continued to tackle the prevention of binge drinking by hosting another LessThanUThink (LTUT) event at the SHU football game this past Saturday, Oct. 25, against Saint Francis University.

LTUT team members handed out sunglasses and koozies inside the front entrance of Campus Field from 12:15 p.m. until the end of the first quarter.

Along with the other LTUT souvenirs, team members handed out stickers to game-day fans with the message, “It takes less than U think to stop the Red Flash.” LTUT messaging aims to spread awareness about the negative consequences of binge drinking in both an entertaining and engaging way.

“The LTUT team and I are really excited about all the participation we’ve had from students so far this year,” said Shauna Santos-Dempsey, a student at SHU. “We hope that with each event, more and more students will know what LTUT is, understand the effects of binge drinking and want to change their lifestyles.”

Students are not the only participants involved in LTUT. Members of the community, such as Senator Chris Murphy, have acknowledged the campaign. Murphy attended the LTUT table at Fresh Check Day on October 2.

“I was so impressed by the LTUT team when I visited their expo on campus a few weeks ago,” Murphy said. “These students are doing their part to make sure their peers make smart and responsible decisions about their health. Sacred Heart should be proud of these enthusiastic and hardworking students, and I hope that their efforts will resonate across colleges in Connecticut.”

Anyone who was unable to attend the football game will still have an opportunity to participate in LTUT. Another event, titled “Boo Bash,” will take place Thursday, October 30 from 3 to 5 p.m. “Boo Bash” will be held on 63’s Patio where people can grab some free souvenirs including glow-in-the-dark cups. During the event, students will be encouraged to take “spooky selfies” and share them on social media to snag limited edition LTUT Halloween themed T-shirts.

LTUT was created by advertising and public relations students at The University of Alabama to address the national problem of college-age binge drinking for the 2009 National Student Advertising Competition, hosted by The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol and Responsibility (FAAR) and the American Advertising Federation (AAF).

LTUT aims to increase awareness among students of the negative outcomes of binge drinking and motivate them to make responsible decisions when consuming alcohol.
