The Exponential Growth of Technology Over The Last Ten Years

Walk into any coffee shop and, as you wait in line to place your order, you’ll probably see a man furiously typing away at his half-inch thick computer. You’ll probably also see a lady immersed in the world of Lolita as she “flips” a page on her Amazon tablet. Maybe you’ll see a group of giggling girls scrolling through their Instagram feed as well.

Today, this is all normal, but just ten years ago, any one of those sights would have been astounding. In the last ten years, the growth of technology has exploded, and it continues to explode.

Each day, people are pouring over codes, working and reworking computer sequences to generate computer programs not only for entertainment, but for scientific and business use as well. Last year, Apple’s iTunes store surpassed 40 billion apps! The store continues to add about 20,000 apps per month.

The computer software industry has flourished, and so has the computer hardware industry. Scientists are working to reduce the size of—well, almost everything—at least in terms of technology. Today’s computers are not only smaller than the ones ten years ago, but also more efficient. Similarly, the phones of 2014 are incredible. Just think, with a five-inch device, you can complete a myriad of diverse tasks. Even the simplest Smartphone has the convenience of ordering dinner, taking an HD photo, managing emails, or even checking stocks.

In terms of social media, the world has also changed immensely. In fact, the word ‘social media’ wasn’t even commonly used then; it was in the late 2000’s that it became popular.

A decade ago, MySpace was the trendiest social media site. There was no Twitter or Instagram. In fact, even Facebook was just newly hatched. Today, popular social media sites change every year. Whichever site was the King in terms of popularity last year could now be trying to catch up.

If we consider the technology we have in 2014 as amazing compared to ten years ago, what will we think about the technology in 2024? 2034? 2044?
