Osborn Hill Students Learn About Horseshoe Crabs from SHU Biologists

Fairfield, CT --Over the past two weeks, through May 23rd, Fairfield parent Emiko Nomoto organized an afterschool program at Osborn Hill Elementary School featuring members of Sacred Heart University's biology department. SHU representatives shared information and hands-on experiences with regard to Project Limulus, an ongoing horseshoe crab protection program. The group hosts horseshoe tagging events early summer at local beaches and hosts community outreach events.

"I thought it would be a very inspiring experience before summer starts to share knowledge from professionals with our young children who live along Long Island Sound," said Nomoto.

SHU Professor Jo-Marie Kasinak led the afterschool sessions and hoped to inspire young future biologists. Students and their parents alike were thrilled with the program.

The concluding class focused on the global impact of the horseshoe crab's life in the food chain and the purpose of tagging them.
