George & Georgia Stavros Pass, Age 100 and 97

Fairfield, CT - George and Georgia Stavros, aged 100 and 97, died Sunday, May 22nd -- within one and one half hour of each other's death while receiving hospice care at home.

George and Georgia left behind three children, Olga Leavitt of New Jersey, Deena Gonis of California, and Thomas Stavros of Fairfield, two son-in-laws Peter Leavitt and Antonios Gonis, and five grandchildren, Harry Leavitt, Ifigenia Gonis, Antigone Gonis, George Leavitt and David Leavitt. Another son, Steven Stavros, preceded their death, at aged 59, in 2010.

George and Georgia were both born in Greece in the village of Voutsara in the province of Arcadia and married in 1946. George is one of three brothers and four sisters, three of whom survive him with loving memory, Costandina Sarlas, who lives with her husband Spiros Sarlas in Glyfada,Greece, Maria Agortsas, who lives with her husband Costas Agortsas in Fairfield CT, and Peter Stavros who lives with his wife Georgia Stavros in Huntington, NY. Georgia is one of five children all of whom are now deceased. Georgia is survived by her sister-in-law Maria Giannopoulou in Athens, Greece. Also, George and Georgia are survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and friends, too numerous to mention here individually.

George was a World War II veteran who fought bravely against the Nazi occupation and marched in the Albanian War. After the war, as his father Stavros grew older, George and Georgia took over the duties of his father including managing the family farms. After George's father died, George became the patriarch of the family along with his brother Costandinos and Peter and they all were proud of the fact that all their sisters were married properly and established their own families. Running the family farms was a difficult task. At aged 51 and 48, with the help of his brother Peter who had preceded them to the United States, George and Georgia were able to immigrate to the United States with their four children.

George and Geogia worked as custodians at Andrew Warde High School in Fairfield, CT for many years until they were in their 80's when they fully retired. During that time, the family was able to pool their resources and purchase two duplexes with the help of George's brother Peter, in addition to a family home. Today the family owns and successfully operates 14 apartments. Their success in building a family business can be attributed to a good work ethic, natural mechanical ability, good luck or timing, and pride in their work. George and Georgia were most happy when working and providing for themselves, their family and others.

Services will be held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 4070 Park Ave Bridgeport on Tuesday May 24, 2016 at 11am with Fr. Georgios Livaditis Presbyter officiating followed by interment in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport. Calling hours will take place on Tuesday morning from 9am until time of service in the church. The Commerce Hill Funeral Home, 4798 Main St. Bridgeport has been entrusted with the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church or to Fairfield Warde High School Scholarship fund in loving memory of George and Georgia.
