Former Bridgeport Library President Helen Liskov Passes, Age 104

Bridgeport, Ct -- Helen Werner Liskov, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2016 at the age of 104, with her loving family at her side.

Helen was born in Mount Vernon, N.Y. but settled in Bridgeport with her family at a very young age. She was educated in the Bridgeport public school system and it was her great dream to attend college. She was a determined young woman and upon graduation from high school, she became a secretary in the newly established University of Bridgeport. This allowed her the opportunity to become a student in the first graduating class of 1929. Helen went on to receive her Bachelor's Degree at New York University and later received her Master's Degree from the University of Bridgeport. Upon graduation from NYU at the age of 18, she began teaching and later entered into her career as a conscientious guidance counselor. Throughout her lengthy professional career, Helen influenced the lives of countless students both as a dedicated teacher and guidance counselor. Above all, she possessed an enthusiastic and thoroughly optimistic zest for life filled with intelligence, strength, compassion, kindness and love that inspired and motivated all who knew her. Her favorite phrase was "just let it be good."

Born at a time when women did not even have the right to vote, throughout her long and productive life, Helen was a passionate advocate for woman's rights along with all issues involving education and children's welfare. During her many years of service within the Bridgeport community, Helen was a long time member of the Bridgeport Public Library Board of Directors, becoming the first female Board member in its then 88 year history and also served as Board President. She also served as a founding member on the Bridgeport Mayor's Coalition on Community Concerns, a member of the Board of Directors of the Bridgeport Housing Alliance and long time Board Member of the League of Woman's Voters. During her lifetime, Helen was honored with numerous awards including the University of Bridgeport Distinguished Alumni Award, the Greater Bridgeport League of Women Voter's Volunteer of the Year Award and the YWCA Outstanding Achievement Award. However, notwithstanding her many civic achievements and contributions, Helen cherished and loved her family above everything. That was truly her greatest joy in life. Her kindness, generosity, love and devotion to the common good will be deeply missed but forever live in the hearts and memories of her loving family and all who knew her.

Helen was predeceased by, Samuel, her beloved husband of 64 years, her loving and devoted children, Judith Zabin and husband Albert, of Lexington, MA, Andrew Liskov and his wife Marsha, of Trumbull, CT and Richard Liskov and his wife Rise of Riverdale, NY. Helen is also survived by 8 loving grandchildren and 14 loving great grandchildren. The family is forever grateful for the attentive and loving care provided by Hanna and Krystina and all the dedicated and compassionate caretakers at Vitas Hospice.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Abraham Green Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the Helen and Samuel Liskov Humanities Fund at the Bridgeport Public Library, 925 Broad Street, Bridgeport, CT 06604 or The Workman's Circle, 247 W. 37th Street, New York, N.Y. 10018.
