Longtime Fairfielder Joan Swanson Passes, Age 82

Fairfield, CT -- Joan Caryl Swanson, 82 of Fairfield, the beloved wife of the late Carl R. Swanson, passed away peacefully at home, with her family by her side on Saturday, October 22nd. She was born in the Bronx in New York to the late Nils and Edna Ahlin and lived there for seven years. She was a longtime Fairfield resident. 

Joan was a Sheriff and Fairfield County State Marshall for over 30 years and retired in 2012. She was also a devoted member of Fairfield Grace United Methodist Church in Fairfield for over 60 years. She was Vice President and longtime member of the Emblem Club of Fairfield 389 and a member of the Elks Club 2220. In addition, at one time she was the President of the Women's Society and a member of the Human Services Commission. Joan's greatest joy was visiting and spending time with her friends and family. They all meant so much to her.

Joan is survived by her two loving daughters, Karen Mott and her husband, Lee of Bridgeport and Laura Postler and her husband, Chris of Tahoe Vista, CA. She will also be missed by her sister, Karen Hart and her husband, William of South Windsor; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Nils J. Ahlin, Jr. 

Friends may greet Joan's family on Friday, October 28th from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Rd. in Fairfield Center. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 29th at 11:00 a.m. at Fairfield Grace United Methodist Church, 1089 Fairfield Woods Rd, Fairfield, CT 06825. There will be a reception at the church following the memorial service. Interment will be private at Lawncroft Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in Joan's memory to The Father Coleman Council 2616, Knights of Columbus, P.O. Box 66, Fairfield, CT 06824.
