Former Fairfielder George Wagner Passes, Age 89

Fairfield, CT -- George Charles Wagner, formerly of Fairfield CT, passed away on Jan 6, 2017, in Austin TX; he was 89.

George was born in New York on April 8, 1927 and attended Barnard School and then Fordham Preparatory School where he graduated with honors in 1944, playing football, baseball and basketball. He immediately enlisted in the Navy during World War II serving as a radar technician on the destroyer escorts USS Rizzi and USS Osberg. He received the American Theater Medal and the Victory Medal.

After the war, George attended Arizona State University on the GI Bill studying electrical engineering, and he married Adeline ("Addie") Marano in 1947. The couple then moved to Fairfield, CT where they raised three children. George worked at Norden's in Norwalk, CT, and then at Perkin-Elmer's Danbury Optical System where he held the highest security level clearance, working with the design of the electrical components of the Hubble Space Telescope.

George's favorite pastimes were golf, stained glass, and model building - he was a true master at each! He was also a collector of coins, stamps, political buttons and more.

After retirement, George and Addie moved to Emerald Isle, NC, where, in addition to his other passions, he loved to fish and walk on the beach collecting shells.

George was active in numerous other service and charitable organizations over the years including the Knights of Columbus. He was a devout and active member of the Catholic Church.

George was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Addie Marano Wagner. George is survived by his children, George Wagner Jr. and his wife, Roberta Mayer, of Hopewell, New Jersey, his daughter Lori Kattner and her husband Lanny of Austin, Texas, and John Wagner and his wife Sue Hart of Trumbull, CT. He is also survived by his sisters Jean Cannon, Mary Lou Quibedeaux and Nancy Bradley, and by six grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and 29 nieces and nephews.

The family will hold private services in Connecticut.
