Pequot Library Plans Special Summer Events for Youth & Families

Southport, CT – Over 350 Fairfield residents kicked off the summer season at Miss Susan’s Potluck & Campout at Pequot Library on June 9, 2017, with 20 intrepid families camping out on Pequot’s expansive Great Lawn. A delicious community potluck supper fed the masses, children enjoyed customized games with a huge sailboat spinnaker, the Merwin Mountain Band sang summer-vibe music, s’mores were roasted on an open fire, and ghost stories were shared.

The next community family event is scheduled for Tuesday, July 4, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The Annual 4th of July Bike Parade and Lawn Games is a holiday experience that starts at the Five Corners in Southport Village with decorated bikes, scooters, and wagons. Folks parade down Pequot Avenue to arrive at the Great Lawn, where Fourth of July-themed fun and games, including sack races, hula hooping, and crafts, commence. This is a free event with hot dogs and ice cream available for purchase from local vendors.

Pequot’s Summer Reading Program, which celebrates reading throughout the summer months, is ongoing. Welcoming and engaging pre-readers through readers entering 12th grade, this program provides a fun and free learning activity for the community. Pre-readers may have books read to them. Any book read at home, on vacation, or in the Library will be eligible for the child’s reading log. This year’s summer reading theme, Build a Better World, is seen through the lens of building a stronger community with acts of service and charitable work, both locally and globally.
