WHS to Present Film "Wonderful World of Westport"

The film "Wonderful World of Westport" was a birthday gift to the town by Jim McManus of Marketing Corporation of America. Westport celebrated its 150th anniversary in 1985 and Mr. McManus hired local film producers Frank Jacoby and his wife, Doris Storm, to write and produce the story of Westport: its people and places, its past and future, its beauty and excitement. In order to show all four seasons and to have only local people narrate Westport's story, the film wasn't released until 1986. Shown all over town – including the movie house – "The Wonderful World of Westport" became the town's signature and is often shown at the Westport Library and distributed as a gift to homesick college students and former residents.

Featured in the film as "narrators" talking about the town they love are Mason Adams, Joanne Woodward, Harry Reasoner, Win Elliott, former first selectwomen Marty Hauhuth and Jackie Heneage, Jim McKay, Jo Fox and Dick Leonard of Staples High, among many others. The film also features an original song by Neil and Dara Sedaka. Copies of the film will be available at the showing for purchase.

This documentary will be shown at Westport Historical Society, 25 Avery Place on May 2, 2014 from Noon to 1 pm. Bring a lunch, enjoy and meet with Doris for a Q & A after the film. Donation: $5, please call 203-222-1424 to register.
